About institution
The Primary and Secondary School "9. maj" was founded in 1966 and is located in the very heart of Zrenjanin. Upon its establishment, the school was located in the building that was built back in 1903, representing an important cultural monument, protected by the institute for monument protection.
The main activity of the school is provision of education in the following categories:
- preschool education for children aged three to school age, including the preparatory preschool programme, for preschool groups of children with developmental disabilities;
- primary education for children with developmental disabilities - in the central school in Zrenjanin and satellite units in Melenci, Stajićevo and Alternativa;
- secondary vocational education for students with developmental disabilities, in the following four fields of work: Mechanical engineering and metal processing (qualifications -Locksmith and Car tinsmith); Trade, catering and tourism (qualification- Food preparer); Textile and leather industry (qualification - Garment seamster and Footwear seamster) and Agriculture and food processing (qualification - Baker, Florist-gardener). Students who attend our school have practical classes organised in school workshops or in cooperation with other local organisations and entrepreneurs.
Instruction is delivered in three shifts. Education is delivered in two teaching languages: Serbian and Hungarian.
We provide day-care for pupils of the first and second cycle of primary education.
The school has adequate staff capacities required for an efficient education activities.
In addition to lower grade teaching, lower grade subject teaching and upper primary teaching, there are other services at the school, such as:
Expert Services comprising two psychologists and one social worker;
The school library that employs one librarian;
School Healthcare Service that employs six medical technicians.
There are six teacher-defectologists who work with the preschool development group.
On a daily basis, according to a strictly defined timeframe, our students have teachers at their disposal, who provide them with individual or group exercises. Teachers-defectologists are engaged in individual classes - providing corrective stimulating exercises, in fact: five speech and language therapists, seven psychomotor skill reeducators, two corrective gymnastics teachers and two social skill teachers.
Our colleagues, teacher-defectologists for corrective stimulating exercises provide additional professional support in other institutions/schools in Zrenjanin and surrounding settlements. A large number of children and pupils from regular schools are included in the additional support provided by 21 teacher-defectologist, and a growing trend has been recorded in the number of pupils requiring the professional support.
There are many goals and tasks we are trying to accomplish at school.
One of the main tasks is to include our pupils in the social life of the community at all levels. The most important thing, besides education, is the corrective and pedagogical activity, aimed at ensuring an expert support in becoming independent and building the capacities of our pupils for an independent work and life in general.
Besides working with children and pupils, our teachers are also engaged in consultations for parents, in individual meetings, parent-teacher meetings, at the Parents' Club and various open forums.
Cooperation between parents and the school has been crucial in the social development of pupils.
This kind of relationship increases the possibilities and creates an opportunity for each pupil to reach their potential.
