About institution

Secondary education in Novi Kneževac has had over a hundred-year long tradition. The Serbian School Supervisory Authority Novi Kneževac existed back in 1876. Part of the present-day building was built in 1935 as Sokolarski dom. The school has changed its name, following the transformation and education reforms.
From 1954 it operated as a vocational school, and from 1957 as the school for general education of workers. The School of Economics started work in 1961. The present-day school building was constructed in 1962, which also marked the beginning of work of the Grammar school offering sciences and social sciences programme. The Grammar School in Novi Kneževac was founded at the request of economic institutions in need of educated employees. As a result, in the first three years of its work, the Grammar School was financed by the Municipality of Novi Kneževac. Classes were delivered in two teaching languages, Serbian and Hungarian. At the beginning of its work, the Grammar School was named "Braća Ribar". In the school year 1966/67 the school for skilled workers was introduced (metal processing and construction). In 1973 this school was named the School for Skilled Workers "25. maj". After the school education reform in 1977, the Grammar School was terminated, introducing general secondary education and vocational secondary education, with law, economics and cultural education programmes.
In 1983 the school integrated with the school from Kanjiža, and was named the Intermunicipal School Centre for Vocational Secondary Education "Bratstvo-jedinstvo" Kanjiža-Novi Kneževac. They separated in 1989, after which the school was named the School for Education "25. maj", providing three-year education for qualifications in mechanical engineering, traffic and chemistry. The Chemistry School was closed in 1992.
On 19 March 1993, the school was named Secondary School "Dositej Obradović" Novi Kneževac. A satellite unit of the Secondary Catering School "Jovan Trajković" from Zrenjanin was established within this school, along with the satellite unit of the Grammar School "Dušan Vasiljev", sciences programme, from Kikinda, in the school year 1994/95. The following school year, the socio-linguistic programme was introduced in the Grammar School and general education programme in 1996/97. In the period from 2001 to 2019, the Grammar School operated as an independent school.
The Provincial Government, at the session held on 10 January 2019, passed the Decision on establishing the Grammar and Vocational School "Dositej Obradović" in Novi Kneževac and terminating the Secondary School "Dositej Obradović" in Novi Kneževac, number 127: 022-980/2018.
